Colophon

Updated

For my fellow nerds: here’s a full peek under the hood of how this site is built and powered. I’ll keep it up to date as things change.

How it’s built

  • Astro lets me put the site together from reusable pieces (one header, one footer, one blog post template, various components) and write the words as plain text files. Then it turns everything into plain, fast HTML pages. That step is called the build, and it runs every time I publish a change. No database, no plugins to update, nothing to log into. Free.
  • Cloudflare runs the build and hosts the site. Free.
  • Blog posts and pages like this one are plain text files (Markdown), kept in Git version control with the rest of the site, so every version is saved. No CMS required (yet).
  • Claude Code writes most of the code, working from my direction. I decide; it writes; I check. I use the $20 Pro plan.

How I work with AI

The site was designed and built with my small AI team:

  • My chief of staff, Ren, who looks after the business and strategy side (offers, dates and priorities);
  • Kit, a specialist web designer and developer, who builds the site.

They work from a handful of shared project files in the site folder, detailing what the site is for, the design rules, and a running status log.

Each session starts with the agent reading them, so nothing depends on anyone remembering the last chat (including me – my memory is terrible). I’m still the one making the decisions.

From my computer to the live site

The whole site lives in a folder on my computer, tracked by Git version control, which records every change. There’s a private copy on GitHub. Git also keeps separate branches, or versions, of the site, so work in progress never touches the live one.

Every change goes through three stages:

  1. On my computer. Kit makes the changes, and I preview them in my browser as we go, at a local address only I can see (localhost).
  2. Staging. When we’re happy, Kit sends the changes to GitHub, to the staging branch. Cloudflare builds that into a test copy of the site at its own web address, hidden from search engines, where I check everything properly.
  3. Live. When I’m ready, I publish staging to the main branch, and Cloudflare builds that into davefoy.com. Only I do this step. Kit never publishes to the live site.

Design

  • Type: headings in Barlow, everything else in Funnel Sans. Both are hosted with the site, not loaded from Google.
  • A design system of my own: every size, space and colour on the site comes from one small settings file. The build stops if Kit sneaks in a one-off value that’s not in the system. See the whole design system.
  • Social sharing images for each page and post are generated automatically during every build.

Under the hood

  • Bento sends my emails and handles newsletter and workshop sign-ups.
  • Fathom Analytics counts visits without cookies.
  • ThriveCart runs the checkout.
  • Termageddon keeps the legal pages current.
  • No tracking cookies, so there’s no cookie banner.
